PLAN: Plan for what? Essentially you have four choices.

to stay put on a long term or undetermined basis because you have no idea if
help will come and you are likely not able to travel. –or

Plan
to leave and you have a good idea where you are going and you must leave. – or

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">Plan to leave and you have no idea where you are going
but you must leave. (probably the worst scenario)

The big question then is to stay put or move on. While this may depend on many things such as
your supplies, weather, ability to travel, knowledge of where to go for safety
and many other factors, IT IS MOST GENERALLY
BEST TO STAY PUT especially if you left a plan with others who are expecting
you and they know where you will be so appropriate search and rescue efforts
can take place with a better chance of success. If you left your trip plan with others then by
all means stay put as much as possible and focus on surviving until rescuers
find you. If after several days of staying put and there
are no signs of rescuers, you may have to consider the possibility of moving on
and finding your way to safety. If you
left no trip plan with someone back home and you did not contact local rangers
or authorities about your plans then you will not have much choice but to try
to find your own way from the start. If
you are lost and must on and have you have no idea where you are going,
according to the degrees of the compass, you have one chance that you will head
in the best direction from the start and 364 chances of going a less favorable
direction. At this point you would
quickly begin to understand and appreciate the value of having a map and
compass and knowing how to use them to help your situation. Even in the worst scenario though- stay
calm, think clearly and keep a positive attitude - YOU CAN SURVIVE.

Whether you stay put or move on your plan should involve
prioritized needs. If you are with other
people be sure to consult with them to come up with your best plan and how to systematically
make it a success. Your plan should
involve making the best use of your resources and conserving energy as much as
possible. Take time to come up with a
well thought out plan. Priorities should
generally be in this order--- medical
care, shelter and fire, signaling for help, water and food. Follow the plan but be open to adjustments to
the plan if required to deal with changing situations.

If you must travel, be sure to leave as many signs along the
way to help searchers know which way you are heading. This will likely help them find you
quicker.

OBSERVATION

Having the talent and skill to observe your surroundings and
understand potential uses for materials
(natural and man-made) can go a long way to increase your potential for survival in the wilderness. Keep a
constant awareness of your surroundings.
Evaluate your options for
survival and observe the weather, terrain, available supplies and equipment, your
personal capabilities and the abilities of your companions if any. Consulting with your companions regarding your options
may present additional observations that you may not have considered. Taking time to constantly observe your
surroundings and situation can save lots of time and effort that may otherwise
compound your situation.

First observe you immediate condition and surroundings. If there are immediate dangers present, then
do what is necessary to address these situations. While there are often materials provided in
nature that may be useful, perhaps you or a member of your group already have
something on you that may be useful.
While you may observe that there is wood and tinder for making a fire
and maybe some stones that can be used to make a spark needed for a fire, if
somebody in your group has a lighter in their pocket or survival kit then maybe
keep the stones for later use if needed but use the lighter for now. While you may observe natural materials that
may be useful for stopping a bleeding wound, first use items from an available
first aid kit when available. While
you may observe some obsidian stones around which are very useful for making
knives, if you already have knives with you
or within your group, then you may be able to forego making obsidian
knives. There is generally not much
point looking for items provided by nature if you already have a suitable tool
for the job. Still, it is always good
to make mental note of items in your surroundings that may be useful or that
may present problems.

Perhaps your observations will dictate that finding shelter
is an immediate priority or perhaps
shelter will be secondary to giving first aid in medical situations. Maybe nighttime is coming soon and you find
yourself in an unfamiliar area and it is best to stay put for the night, make
yourself as comfortable as possible and look for better options when you have
daylight to help in your observations.

One fun activity you might try and it is easy to do - if you are hiking or even driving down the
road, look at the area you are in and observe items (natural and manmade), then
along with your observations determine
at least three ways an item may be useful in a wilderness survival
situation.

While observation goes hand in hand in many ways with the
prior blog “THINK” it should involve using all your different senses as much as
possible along with your thinking.
Thinking is good but observation can be a tremendous support that your
thinking is heading in the right direction.
You may be lost and thinking to go in a certain direction for help but
if you happen to smell bacon cooking, it may be worthwhile to follow your nose
and perhaps find some campers who are cooking breakfast and who are not
lost. Taking time to look, listen, feel
or even taste depending on the situation will help your observations which will
greatly improve your success in the next big step – PLAN.

Above all keep your thoughts realistic and positive. It does no good to be unrealistic about your

thoughts about the situation also. If
there is a very negative person in the group, take that person aside and
explain to them the importance of them having a more positive attitude to help
the rest of the group. Give that person a task that will be helpful for the situation and help them to focus in a positive way.
Taking
time to think involves making an inventory of options before you make any moves

repercussions of each of option Prioritize each separate need, such as
attending to an injury before choosing a plan of action. If there are readily apparent immediate needs
then take care of these first. Remember
that your goal is to survive and be found alive. Surviving may not be really comfortable in
some situations but with time you can improve on the situation. Getting out of immediate dangers is definitely an immediate priority. Taking time to think will
also help prevent panicking. Panicking
is not helpful when trying to survive. This
is a great time to use your brain preparing to move on if needed or to make things safer and more comfortable for staying put. Your most important asset is your
great brain -. use it! Don't Panic! Move with deliberate care. Think first, so you have
no regrets later. Take no action, even a foot step, until you have thought it
through. Unrecoverable mistakes and injuries, potentially serious in a survival
situation, occur when we act before engaging our brains. If you are with a group of people, two heads are often better than one for coming up with helpful ideas.
Just a word or two about the Hug A Tree program---

1. Although the program teaches to tell your child that there are no animals out there will hurt them, this of course is not totally true. I think that it is a good idea to not compound the fears of a child lost in the wild by filling their head with a list of every animal that could harm them. If a child is lost, being lost will generate enough fear to deal with for a child. Parents and adults should realize that even in your presence, a child may be hurt by bugs, snakes, and several animals. Perhaps, depending on the child's age it is best to at least educate the child on creatures to avoid and stay away from (spiders, snakes, skunks, wolves, bears, cougar etc) In some cases perhaps all a child can do is remain still and quite, but in most cases the child can learn to stay away if they see these creatures out in the wild.

Here is an interesting story I just recently came across --Boy attacked by wolf

2. Hug A Tree does not teach children to make fires. There are of course many safety reasons for not teaching a young child to make a fire. However, my personal feelings are that a child can be taught to safely make a fire as early as age 5. They should also be clearly taught that they are not to make a fire out in the wild unless they are lost. Certainly if a child is not taught how to make a fire, they may never know how to do so in a safe and effective manner. When speaking about children, it is generally understood that this refers to individuals under the age of 18. While a 5 year old may not have the motor skills and strength of a 17 year old, they both (and all ages between 5 and 17) should be able to make a fire. A simple fire can give comfort, warmth, be used for cooking and serve as a signal to others. Children 10 years and older should be considered very capable of making a fire and should definitely be equipped and trained to do so. Perhaps one of the easiest items to include in their survival kit is a BIC type lighter ( not trying to promote BIC, just any brand of lighter that you can often buy in dollar stores - sometimes at 3 or 5 for a buck.) Not much money invested for this purchase but it can be a real life saver. The fire may even be used potentially to fend off some animals. If you do not like the idea of teaching a young child (under age 10) to make a fire, then look at other options. Warmth can come via heat packets that are simple to use and they can save the life of a child from hypothermia and freezing. A heat reflective emergency blanket and food bars should also be in the kit to help with body heat. Light sticks and flashlights can provide light and serve for signaling others. These items should be included in any child wilderness survival kits/fanny pack and they are also good items for adult kits as well. Adults should review the kit contents with children before each trip to the wild and make sure the kids know the use of each item and this is a good time to make sure each item is in good condition.
3. The above comments are meant in no way to find fault with the Hug A Tree program. It is a wonderful program in many ways. Certainly the concept of teaching a child to stay put if lost is the most important teaching in the program. I encourage all adults to take to time review this program which has saved lives. Get a good understanding of this program in such a way that you can effectively teach it to your children, grandchildren and if their friend want to join in - all the better. Practice Hug A Tree skills with them and the experience will be fun. Practicing will help the child to know automatically what to do if lost and it can save a life. Teach children also that if they are lost in the wild and they hear searchers calling their name - they should respond by yelling and making their location known.
If
you find yourself lost or confused in a wilderness survival situation, the
first thing to do is take a break. Take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to just
relax. Sit in a comfortable spot and sing a song, recite a poem, watch birds,
or have a snack – whatever relaxes you. If you take just a short break this
will likely diminish going into panic and just running and getting yourself
lost even more. Being relaxed will also likely help you to think more clearly
when break time is over.

S
- STAY where you are if possible as this will make it easier for rescuers to
find you.

When a person is lost in the wilderness, it
is generally best to stay where you are and let rescuers find you. This will be a much easier job for rescuers
if you left a copy of your agenda with a contact person and perhaps a copy also
in your car or main camp site if you traveled away from a camping spot. Unfortunately, there are too many search and
rescue wilderness survival stories in which the search and rescue process is
much more complicated because the lost person haphazardly tried to find their
way back to a safe place when they really did not have a good basis for moving
on further, nor a good sense of direction.
In fact, all too often individuals who are lost in the wilderness tend
to get lost even more by moving on without knowing
which way they should go and they get further away from where they
should be heading.

Lets
take a look at this situation in another perspective. The next time you are about to get in your
car, do you check a certain place in the house for the car keys? Perhaps you keep your keys on a hook by the
kitchen door or in a drawer. Wherever
you generally keep your keys, that is the place you go to get your keys. The last place you put them is where you
expect them to be. Generally that is
where you will find them. Now, lets
suppose somebody moved your keys from where you generally put them. The next time you go to get your key and you
find it is not there, what is your next step toward finding your key? The key can’t tell you where it is anymore
than a person lost in the wilderness can tell you where they are. The concept here is really basic, you tend to
look for a key or lost person where they were last seen. Staying put and letting rescuers find you is
a very good plan. While staying put, you
can spend the time making yourself safer and more comfortable and setting up
signals to make search and rescue efforts easier. So don’t panic and run yourself into getting
further from help.

I
hope readers of this blog have enjoyed the last several blogs which have been
about sculpturing and making use of items that may be found in the wilderness
to help your survival situation. No
doubt there will be many more items to share in the future about making use of
such items or other fun ideas that can be helpful. It seems that when learning about wilderness
survival, people generally want to learn fun and interesting “tricks” to
survival. Maybe this is because these
are fun and when having fun doing something, it is usually easier to
learn. When it come right down to it
though, it is the more simple basics of survival that are generally the most
important things that can save your life.
So while we will eventually and occasionally get back to so called fun
and useful tricks of wilderness survival, it is time to revert back to the
February 2012 blog for some basics of survival.
This months blog then is simply a copy (and a very good reminderof survival
basics) of the February 2012 blog and we will move forward from this point on
the next blog posting.

WHAT
DO YOU DO WHEN YOU FIND YOURSELF IN A WILDERNESS SURVIVAL SITUATION?

While
there can be many wilderness survival scenarios and each scenario may present
different challenges, the one I would like to discuss for this blog is that of
being lost or disoriented. This may sound odd and some people may disagree with
me but the first thing to do is-

TAKE
A BREAK.

That’s
right! Take a break. Take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to just relax. Sit in
a comfortable spot and sing a song, recite a poem, watch birds, or have a snack
– whatever relaxes you. If you take just a short break this will likely diminish
going into panic and just running and getting yourself lost even more. Being
relaxed will also likely help you to think more clearly when break time is
over.

Once
break time is over, then you can take time to STOP.

S
- STAY where you are if possible as this will make it easier for rescuers to
find you.

UnCANny ideas!!!

This is the last of my pop can wilderness survival
ideas. There are many more ways that a
pop can may be used. I hope that the pop
can ideas have been fun and useful for my blog readers. After
this blog I want to go back to the February 2012 blog and move forward from
there. The purpose of the last few blogs
all of which have been ways to use pop cans was just to give examples of ways
to use the things that you may find in the wilderness to help in a survival
situation. Generally there are going to
be other items a person may find in the wilderness which may also be used to
increase the potential for survival. The
important thing is to not look at things simply for what they are but for how
they could be useful. Items that may
generally be seen simply as trash can (with a little imagination) might be very
useful.
I’m certainly not a great skilled fisherman and I recommend
including a fishing kit as part of your wilderness survival kit. However,
if you don’t have a fishing kit, perhaps the following pop can hooks and
lures may help provide a nice meal.
Remember, in a wilderness survival situation you are not necessarily
going to get a restaurant style fish plate.
When trying to survive, just be glad for the protein regardless if it is
a salmon, large mouth bass, catfish, carp or whatever fish you can get. The point is to get the food you need to stay
alive.

The lures and hooks in the following pictures do not have
fishing line attached but the pictures give an idea of what can be done. Although it may be somewhat difficulty to
tell from the pictures, the hooks are most definitely very, very sharp. I hope that readers of this blog will try to
make some of their own hooks and lures.
The only tool needed is a knife but having a multi-tool in your survival
kit would make it even easier to make these items. I hope my blog readers try to make some
hooks and lures too.

Finally the last of the wilderness
survival pop can ideas --- snow goggles.

Many wilderness survival
enthusiasts are familiar with improvising snow goggles. They can be made from a piece of leather and
some string of other available materials.
The purpose of improvised snow goggles is to protect your eyes. If you are stuck in the wilderness in a snow
covered area and you have to travel, the glare from the sun and the reflection
from the snow can be blinding to the point your eyes can be damaged or you can
become snow blind. The loss of your
vision significantly complicates a wilderness survival situation.

The bottom outside portion of the
two pop cans goes over the eyes. Each
piece of pop can has a hole punched in the middle (from the bottom outside of
the can toward the inside of can). The
punched hole can be enlarged slightly if needed. Each pop can piece also has a hole punched
into each side of the piece also. I
happened to have a wire bread bag tie which I used to fasten the two pieces
together by threading it through the holes and twisting the wire tie. The eyepieces are fastened around the head
with a shoelace or a piece of string. Not only do they protect the eyes, they also
reflect outward which serves as a reflector mirror which may help searchers to

This months blog is another example of creative uses of so called "junk" that you may find in the wilderness. It is important to see things not for what they are but for what they can become. The first picture here is a signal mirror that took just a few minutes to make without much effort at all and only with the use of a pocket knife.

This next picture is the same signal mirror shown in the shade.

This last picture shows the basic materials used to make the signal mirror. It's a matter of simple cutting and then bending and crimping the edges together.

You don't really need to join the two pieces of pop cans together, one can alone make a good signal mirror. It is nice to know if you run into a six pack of cans in the wilderness you can make an even bigger signal mirror. As seen on a prior blog the bottom piece of pop cans can be used as a fire starter because it reflects the rays of the sun. Even a few bottom pop cans can be used in combination to make a mirror.

So this is a very simple project that can be used to get someones attention that may attract the attention you need.
situation. These examples were just to
get the reader thinking about how to use so called “junk” that you may find in
the wilderness, as wilderness survival aids.
We will continue the next few blogs with some more examples of fun pop can uses. Eventually we will go back to the “Take a
Break” blog from February.

Pop can Lantern - Full Flame

One of the examples showed how to make a lantern from a
pop can and some cooking oil. . So what
if you find a pop can but you do not have some cooking oil? Another option I have seen is to
punch a hole in the bottom of the can and make a small door on the pop can and
then push the candle up through the bottom hole as needed. An easily made and useful lantern. So what if you do not have a candle in your
survival kit? Well here is another
example of a wilderness survival lantern.

Make a “I” shaped cut on the can which results in two doors
that fold out from the can. The bottom
of the doors is about 1 to 2 inches from the bottom of the can. Leave the pull tab on the can as this is
useful for if the can is to be attached to a cord and hung suspended.

Some friends of mine recently gave me some deer steaks and a
few deer ribs (Thanks Kami and Ivan!). I decided to make some
soup from the deer ribs. After boiling the ribs, I set the pot in the refrigerator over night. In the morning I skimmed off the very dense
grease which had risen to the top. I
figured the fat could be used for making a candle. I packed the cooled fat or tallow into the
can then I found a small piece of scrap cloth which was stuffed in the center
of the fat but just a little bit above the fat.
This was the wick to the candle.
Most any cloth will work or even a tightly rolled piece of paper or
small piece of cardboard will make a sufficient wick.

Once
the wick is lit on fire, the heat wicks up the heated fat. The fat then becomes the burning element
rather than the wick. If you are in a
wilderness survival situation, you may come across an animal carcass. Chances are the carcass still has fat that
can be used for a lantern. So here are a
few pictures from my deer fat / pop can lantern.
The can reflects the light very well and the lantern gives off a good
amount of heat too which could be a double benefit in a snow cave shelter.

Sorry for not posting
a blog for a while, sometimes things happen.
I have been eager to post a blog in continuing where my blog from
February left off.

Take a break and STOP.
I mentioned that I would elaborate more on this subject and present some
fun wilderness survival items. The
ability to observe your surroundings is important. You can enhance your survival odds by having
some knowledge and creativity of what can be used in your surroundings to your
benefit. Les Stroud touched on this
skill in his book Survive. He referred
to this as “sculpturing”. Simply put, it
is the skill of being able to find multiple uses for items which you may find
in the wilderness.

Now, these links are just rather simple illustrations yet
several good examples of “sculpturing”.
Please take a look at the following ----

A big thank you to the many people who have put these videos
together and who have been so kind to share them for the benefit of others.

There are several other cool uses for pop cans in wilderness
survival. When a person is in a
wilderness survival situation, making use of things you may find can be a real
boost to morale and increase your potential to do well. More on this subject soon.

Be wise, be safe and happy adventures.

While there can be many wilderness survival scenarios and each scenario may present different challenges, the one I would like to discuss for this blog is that of being lost or disoriented. This may sound odd and some people may disagree with me but the first thing to do is-

TAKE A BREAK.

That’s right! Take a break. Take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to just relax. Sit in a comfortable spot and sing a song, recite a poem, watch birds, or have a snack – whatever relaxes you. If you take just a short break this will likely diminish going into panic and just running and getting yourself lost even more. Being relaxed will also likely help you to think more clearly when break time is over.

Once break time is over, then you can take time to STOP.

S - STAY where you are if possible as this will make it easier for rescuers to find you.

T- THINK calmly about your situation and options. Evaluate and remain positive.

O- OBSERVE the weather, your surroundings, your equipment/supplies and capabilities.

P- PRIORITIZE immediate needs(shelter, medical, fire, water, signal and food) – develop a plan of action, follow your plan, remain positive.

I’ll discuss more on these subjects in future months. I’ll also present some fun wilderness survival items.

Remember to TAKE A BREAK and STOP. Until next month—

Attitude can present more dynamics to wilderness survival situations when you are with a group. Some people may panic and they may be ill prepared mentally and emotionally to deal with a sudden wilderness survival situation. They may even be ill prepared equipment wise. If you are part of a group wilderness survival situation and you are dealing with people who may be prone to be panic which sometimes leads to impulsive and dangerous behaviors, keep in mind that you have the ability to share your positive attitude and work together to generally increase the potential of everybody surviving. Generally, there is safety in numbers and better odds of coming up with great ideas when you put your heads together.

If you are considering taking a class in wilderness survival or going to a wilderness survival school, try to observe or learn about the attitude of the instructors. Over the years, I’ve met people who considered themselves to be wilderness survival professionals. Many of these individuals no doubt have lots of knowledge on the subject. But, if the individual seems to have somewhat of a cocky attitude or a demeanor that belittles other people who are trying to learn, it is probably better to look elsewhere for a new instructor. A good wilderness survival instructor wants you to succeed. If you encounter an instructor with the attitude that they do not need to take precautions such as notifying others where they are going or they don’t need to take a survival kit with them because they have such vast experience and knowledge in the field of survival – it is likely best to avoid such people. Such instructors will focus mostly on puffing up their own pride rather than focusing on your ability to succeed. I was in a conversation with my brother once about this and he stated that some wilderness survival instructors have the attitude that you’re not a real man if you can’t survive with nothing more than a toothpick and a comb. This is not the right attitude for a good wilderness survival instructor.

I recall several individuals I’ve watched on TV who were considered by some to be wilderness survival experts. Some of them have even worked as a couple team in wilderness survival situations. Although I think that these individuals all have some knowledge and some talent in wildness survival and a person can learn some good things from them, I also believe some of them were very poor examples in some of their actions and their attitudes. One member of a couple team in particular I observed to be very negative and condescending toward his wilderness survivor companion. Although they both seemed to make things work out by the end of each episode, I’m sure that his companion would almost have preferred to survive the wilderness alone. Another so called expert who did a TV series was quite surprising to me in the fact that he frequently did incredibly dangerous activities that were very risky to his health. One time he took a long jump from a cliff to grab onto a tree to try climbing down the tree when he could not actually see how far down the branches went and not knowing for sure if the branches would hold his weight. The jump could have ended in death or broken bones – not good when trying to survive. Although some people find this person to be entertaining wilderness survival (and in many ways he is), I would not recommend many of his ways because young people who watch him do risky activities may try to do the same thing and find themselves worsening their wilderness survival situation.

While I’m not trying to find the bad in any of these individuals (really trying to keep a positive mental attitude) I would only caution against some of their attitudes and their poor examples. Look for people who will give you a positive mental attitude and the skills to survive.

Next month I will be discussing what to do when you find yourself in a wilderness survival situation. I will also present a list of topics I will discuss for each of the remaining months of 2012. For now, just a reminder – YOU CAN SURVIVE.

Happy adventures,

Joe Simpson made a remark toward the end of the book about his experience making the film when he went back to the scene of his survival experience. He commented about a sense of invincibility in the past years. Elsewhere in the book there were some other comments that were also somewhat supportive of a carefree attitude although Joe and Simon were indeed experienced adventurers. It is remarkable too that Joe and Simon recognized that their fatal mistake happened before they left their base camp. A very small piece of equipment would have made all the difference in their story.

I would encourage reading the story or watching the movie. The book is not very long but gives remarkable insight to a wilderness survival situation. Again, I would express my gratitude toward Joe Simpson and Simon Yates for sharing their story.

The few examples that were given via web links were nothing more then examples and not a particular endorsement of any one particulary type of kit. Survival kits can be a blog subject easily for a solid year and more. The examples were only meant to illustrate that kits can easily be homemade, carried and inexpensive. A person could of course make any number of survival kits with a wide variety of contents. So be aware that when you make a survival kit, you should by all means taper the kit and the contents to your specific needs and possibilities that may be encountered. The main point is to have a kit and have it on you when you need it. Enough said then for now about survival kits. This will surely be a subject of many future blogs.

RULE 4: NEVER, NEVER GO OUT ALONE

I know that there are mixed feeling about this rule in some peoples opinions and I am somewhat (very little actually) sympathetic toward the reasons people give for going out in the wilderness alone. The fact is however, there is generally safety in numbers and often two heads are better than one. I know there may be arguments against these statements too, but look at it this way-------------------------

If you were along and injured and dealing with some type of misfortune in the wilderness, you would very likely at that time appreciate that somebody else was there to give you a hand. Misfortunes and tragedies can happen so easily in the wilderness and even to the most experienced outdoors enthusiast. Perhaps your buddy happened to pack an item that you did not pack and that one item may make a difference of surviving for your group. Perhaps your hiking buddy or somebody in your group has a particular skill or experience that may be needed and that you may be lacking or simply not quite as skilled with as your buddy and the level of skill can make a significant difference in survival outcomes. Keep in mind too that a solo hiker or adventurer is more vulnerable to attacks from predators (human and animal predators).

Here is a little test to consider if you are totally confident that you do not need anybody else to go with you in the wilderness------

Go to the nearest high school track and lay down on the track then drag your body once around the track with your legs as dead weight. Once around the track (which is generally about ¼ mile) and you will not likely want to keep repeating the experience. One quarter of a mile is not far at all when you are able to walk but it can be a very unpleasant experience when you are not able to walk or when your walk is painful and causing more damage. Still think the ¼ mile is not so bad? Keep in mind the most running tracks are on fairly even ground with somewhat padded material. This is not the case when you travel one quarter mile in the wilderness. Still not convinced? Try doing the one quarter mile on the track in the rain, a blizzard or on a very hot day without drink or warmth available. Maybe even try it with a backpack on you back. Chances are that if you are in a real survival situation you will likely be more then one quarter mile away from help. At times like this it would be in your best interest to have somebody with you who can help. Worse case scenarios have been experienced by all too many people in the wilderness when they go out alone and with no survival kit and get into misfortunate situations. Remember, when it comes to you vs nature, nature generally has the advantage. I mentioned in a previous blog the website Hiker Hell . If you get a chance, take a look at this site and see how many stories you can find in just a few minutes about individuals who went out alone in the wilderness. These people learned the hard way. Some of them did not survive the experience. Don’t let this happen to you. NEVER, NEVER GO OUT ALONE.

Just suppose for a moment that you (or a family member) became lost or stranded in the wilderness. If rules 1 and 2 were followed, this should help to boost your morale and to some degree assure you that help is likely on the way. Even so, it may take some time before help arrives. Meanwhile, you (or your family member) would greatly benefit by having a survival kit on you. The kit can provide much needed extra comfort and help increased the odds of being found and not only just surviving but surviving somewhat comfortably. Before we go any further about survival kits, just a quick reminder about rules 1 and 2.

RULE 1. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

RULE 2. LET SOMEBODY ELSE KNOW

Okay, onward and forward with rule 3. ALWAYS KEEP A SURVIVAL KIT ON YOU

So there are lots of questions to ask about survival kits mainly – Should you buy a kit or make a kit? What items should be in the kit? For now, the first thing to do is get a paper and something to write with as this blog will introduce some helpful information to get you started.

Ready with your paper? Now please review the kits on these websites and make a column listing the contents of the kit of the first kit. When you review the second kit, put a check mark by items already listed and any new items add to the column list. By the time you have reviewed the following websites you will not only see a variety of kits and sizes of kits but you will readily see items that are repeatedly listed in most of the kits. This will provide you with a good list for starting your own wilderness survival kit.

Personally, I favor the concept of making your own survival kit rather than buying a kit. But that is my opinion. Even a purchased kit is better than no kit at all. If you are in a real survival situation, something is always better than nothing as far as kits go. If you look at kits you will soon see that there are kits that can be very expensive and weigh many pounds and there are very compact kits such as the Altoids type of kits. If nothing else, start with a kit that you can always carry ON YOU. It will do you no good at all to have a deluxe wilderness survival kit in the trunk of your car when you go on a hike, if you are stranded 10 miles away from the car. So KEEP THE KIT ON YOU. This may be a small kit in your pocket, a hiking pole kit, a wilderness survival necklace or wilderness survival hat. Better yet, why not all of them. Wilderness survival kits can actually be very inexpensive to make. This will be the subject of future blogs as well since there is so much to consider when making these kits. The main point for now is to start making a kit today for yourself and for each member of your family. Make it a goal to have the kit completed before you go on your next wilderness adventure. By the way, making the kits is a great family activity or can be a great get together party for you and your outdoor adventure friends.

RULE 2: LET SOMEBODY ELSE KNOW - Before you go on your outing make sure that someone dependable knows where you are going, when you will be back, who you are going with, how you are getting there(your car or a friends car), trails that you plan to hike, food and supplies that you plan to take (enough for two people for 1 week or whatever). Make sure that they know which authorities to call if you have not returned safely by a specified time (so search and rescue efforts can be started as early as possible).

I remember doing story problems in math classes at school, so here is an interesting wilderness survival story problem. Johnny left his house two days ago. He had a sleeping bag, hiking boots and a back pack. We haven't heard from him, can you find him? This seems like sort of dumb story problem but all too often this is reality. When people go out on wilderness adventures, whether it be camping, hiking or snowmobiling, and they haven't provided details of when they'll be back, how long they'll be gone, or where they went, then search and rescue efforts are like finding a needle in a haystack - or worse! Actually, the needle is probably easier to find.

There was a book written recently, that was made into a film, which demonstrates this point. The individual ended up cutting off his own arm in order to survive. Of course, the biggest problem that I see is that this individual went out alone. There was some general idea of the area where this person went to but there were simply not enough details to initiate an efficient and quick search and rescue effort. Just recently another hiker was stranded in the same area. The hiker was alone, 64 years old and broke a leg. He was crawling for four days before he was spotted by a search and rescue crew. Nobody knew for sure where to look, but there was a general idea (which could mean miles of area to search). I recently read in the newspaper about another individual who went hiking alone and it was determined that he was to meet up with some friends at a certain location, at a certain time. When he did not show up they realized fairly soon that something was wrong. So they contacted the authorities and a search & rescue effort was started. These scenarios happen all too frequently and a few precautions can greatly aid search and rescue efforts and enhance your probability of being found alive.

So let's look at a few suggested precautions....

1) Make sure that someone dependable knows where you are going, when you will be back, who you are going with, how you are getting there (your car or a friends car). Actually don't limit yourself to one dependable person. If that dependable person has some unforeseen event and they're not available it will be all the much better that two or three people know the details. Don't leave the information simply recorded on a phone. Write this information down, tell them the information and give them the written information. Explain that you have confidence in them and that you know that you can depend on them in case you end up in an unforeseen situation.

Once you have let them know where you are going, don't change your plans at the last minute. If you told your friend that you are going to a certain location in the Everglades [of Florida] and on your way there you decided to go to Disneyworld instead this presents an awkward situation if the search and rescue people are called out to look for you. If you told your friend that you will be back in three days from your Montana camping spot and you are just really enjoying yourself at the camp and decide stay for four more days which is not part of the plan you may find you have some camp visitors from local search and rescue and sheriff authorities.

It is important to let your dependable person know who you are going with for several reasons. For example, if you don't return at your scheduled time and your dependable person knows that you went hiking with Tom and Robert, they can try to contact Tom and Robert. Perhaps you had a change of plans and your friends can let your dependable contact person know of the change in plans, in the event that you failed to inform them of such a change yourself. Second, knowing who you went with may give search and rescue crews additional information such as a friend who has a particular medical condition or knowing that certain members of your group have some degree of wilderness survival skills.

Knowing about your mode of transportation used to your destination can also be a great aid in knowing how to find you (and your party). For example, if you are going to a fishing spot that is one hundred miles away, it would be very helpful to know if you went there by car or an airplane. If your friend has a small airplane and you all decided to fly to this fishing spot there is usually a flight plan or some type of communication that would help in search and rescue efforts. If you are traveling by car, it helps to know whose vehicle because the type of vehicle may be suitable for certain terrains or not, which may indicate where the vehicle may be stuck. Lastly, make sure that your dependable person has a good description of the vehicle (plane, boat, etc.) as this information can be useful for search and rescue efforts.

2) The information you provide, to your dependable person, should include trails that you plan to hike, food and supplies that you plan to take (enough for two people for 1 week or whatever). If you tell your dependable person that you are planning to hike Shady Pine Trail than make sure that's the trail you hike on. Similarly, if you tell them that you plan to fish on Blue Reservoir then that is where you go. If you can be more specific, like say the east side of Blue Reservoir, that will narrow down the area for search and rescue parties to explore. Next, if your dependable person knows what type of food and supplies you took with you this will give some kind of an idea to search and rescue efforts as to how long you could reasonably not be in a severe situation. For example, if you took enough food for three days and search and rescue efforts have not found you in four days, the rescuers know that the situation has become more severe. Or if you took a summer tent and there has been an unforeseeable freak snow blizzard the search and rescue parties know that you have shelter but not adequate for the situation.

3) Make sure that your dependable person knows which authorities to call if you have not returned safely by a specified time (so search and rescue efforts can be started as early as possible). Basically what you have done if you follow these steps is you've placed the value of your life into the hands of a person that you consider dependable. You owe it to honor that person with respect. So stick with the plan that you gave to your dependable person. It would be, at the very least, an embarrassment to you and your dependable person if something went wrong and you had not stuck with the plan and at the worst it could be a life threatening situation which could have been avoided had you stuck with the plan.

What happens if an incident occurs that makes you detour from your original path, plan or trail? For instance, you had to leave the trail because of a wild animal encounter. You couldn't find your way back to the trail. Knowing simple trail signs, which can be done with rocks and sticks, could also be very helpful for search and rescue efforts. Even though you are already off from the trail where the search and rescue parties would be looking they will likely spread out to a point that they may find some of the trail signs that you have made. In the mean time, if possible stay put until search and rescue find.
These are very important rules to follow and should always be part of your outdoor activity preparations. As such, I have decided to blog about these rules separately. This blog is dedicated to Rule 1: Know Before You Go.

RULE 1: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO - Get as much details about the area you plan to visit before you leave home. IE: terrain, climate, animals, plants, maps, seasonal details, current weather conditions, possible risks, recommended equipment for your activity. It is always a good idea to contact local authorities such as park rangers or foresters to advise them of your plans and get any feedback or pointers they would offer.

Before you pack gear for your activity, it helps to know as much as possible about your destination. By destination, I mean both the main destination and the means of getting there. Knowing details about the environment can be a great aid as to what should be packed and what can be left behind. Lots of destinations provide free pamphlets, toll free phone numbers or even very helpful information on the Internet. Of course if you know somebody who has recently been to your planned destination you can ask them questions about their experience also. Somebody who went to your planned destination 20 years ago may provide some helpful information but lots of things change in 20 years so be careful about using information from an experience 20 years ago.

Another very good source of information which should be included with your preparation and which enhances your overall experience is to chat with the locals. Perhaps you are in the vicinity of your destination and you have already contacted a park ranger or did some reading about your destination and as you arrive you may be stopping for gas or a bite to eat before starting on your hike or camping trip. Take time to ask questions to the local people as often they may be aware of recent situations or developments which may help make your trip more enjoyable. For instance, if you plan on doing a jeep tour and after 200 miles you are to reach a beautiful camping spot but you learn from the locals that the camping spot was destroyed the night before in a fire or a flood; then you have saved yourself from a lot of inconvenience. Sometimes the locals can even provide information about special deals that can save you money.

So lets consider a few things to know about before you go--------------------------------------

TERRAIN: Will you be in a sandy or rocky area, wet or dry area, steep hills or gentle slopes, lots of water, will the water be - streams, rivers, lakes or ponds, well vegetated area or lacking in vegetation, are there services available such as gas, stores, phone or food within the area you will be visiting? If you know what kind of terrain you will be traveling, this can make a huge difference of knowing that you have a vehicle that can handle such terrain or if your medical condition and equipment are suitable for the terrain.

CLIMATE: Will you be visiting an area with a rapidly changing climate, a seasonal changing climate or a consistent year around climate?

ANIMALS: Will there be lots of wildlife to view? Is there dangerous wildlife in the area or recent posted warnings? Do you know what to do if you come across wildlife-for instance, a bear, a cougar, a snake?

PLANTS: Are there plants that you should learn about which can be used for food, medicine or just something pretty for pictures? If you enjoy eating wild edible plants have certain areas been sprayed recently with insecticides? Caution-if you are going to use plants, know your plants very well before touching or consuming them. Some plants are poisonous and some can be irritants. In fact, some plants have poisonous look-a-likes. If you are not absolutely sure, leave it alone.

MAPS: Do you have a current map of the area to be visited? Do you understand how to use a map and compass? Perhaps part of knowing before you go may include taking a map and compass class.

SEASONAL DETAILS: Are you visiting an area at the peak of tourist season or if you run into trouble is there slim chance that you will find any help? Does the area you plan to visit have flash floods, avalanches at the time you plan to visit? Is it mating season for certain animals which may not take kindly to human visitors? If you planned on getting certain supplies from a trading post in the area - is the trading post open when you plan to visit?

CURRENT WEATHER CONDITIONS: Although you may have learned about the climate and terrain before visiting the area, usually rangers post current weather conditions. It is really valuable to know the current weather conditions for the day and what are the expectations for the day because sometimes they are not the norm for that season. It is always an excellent idea to check the current and expected weather conditions for the day before heading out on your adventure.

POSSIBLE RISKS: This may include trails that are potentially hazardous to people with certain health conditions or not recommended for children or pets. Or roads that are not recommended for certain types of vehicles. Extreme forest fire potential or flash flooding conditions. Knowing about these and other potential risks before heading out on your adventure could save you from some inconveniences or save your life.

RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT: Once you know about the terrain, climate, current weather conditions, possible risks, animals, maps, plants and seasonal details, and you've checked with local authorities and citizens, you may be advised to carry certain types of equipment. Perhaps an extra container of water because a well that is normally on the trail has dried up. Of course, after knowing the above conditions before you go you'll most likely be able to select equipment that you are comfortable with and you know how to operate well. You're well advised to have a First Aid Kit as part of your equipment wherever you plan on traveling.

This is my first blog and it is my hope to present some very basic points for everyone to consider toward being safer in your outdoor experiences. I will also point out some references that I recommend for further reading. It is not my intention to change anybody to a wilderness survival expert but to help make the reader aware of some basics that can save your life or the life of a loved one. For those of you who feel extremely confident with your outdoor survival skills – the basics are still good points to remember and practice.

As part of this rule, families should keep in mind that when you are hiking together with children, even though you are in a group, DO NOT LET CHILDREN HIKE ALONE even if you are close by. If you are on a group hike but the younger kids who have more energy are about 5-10 minutes further up the trail ahead of you – they are alone! I recommend keeping children within an easy grasp. There are too many dangerous scenarios when young kids are separated on the trail. IE: hungry cougar can be gone with a kid in a flash and without leaving a sign, a curious kid may lean over a cliff to get a better look, or may be curious about a plant or animal and step closer for a better look.

RECOMMENDED <city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">READING</place></city>: for those who want to learn more about wilderness survival -

*OUTDOOR SURVIVAL SKILLS by Larry Dean Olsen.

*SURVIVE! by Les Stroud.

Both of these books give great information. There are several people who have written books or who have made videos about wilderness survival and they all have good things to offer. It is not my intention to get in a discussion of why one author is better than another. I have several reasons why I recommend these books for individuals who want to learn more about wilderness survival.
